Byetta is a type 2 diabetes drug that was manufactured by Amylin Pharmaceuticals and approved for the American market in April 2005. In August 2008, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) determined that Byetta, while providing beneficial glucophage ingestion, also increases the risk of contracting pancreatic cancer.
Since the drug’s market introduction in 2005, over 700,000 patients are at risk. At the time of the FDA finding, doctors reported six cases of pancreatitis, two deaths from pancreatic cancer, and four recoveries.
The result of the FDA’s findings led to numerous lawsuits appearing in the US in 2009. As if the above findings were not enough, it was determined by University of California- Los Angeles (UCLA) researchers that Byetta, when compared to other type 2 diabetes medications, puts patients at three times a higher risk than those other medications.
What Are Possible Side Effects of Byetta?
When talking to a Byetta lawyer, it is important to be aware of the side effects of Byetta so that you can know whether or not you have a credible case. Byetta was intended to be a drug to help keep type 2 diabetes patients on the road to recovery; however, the drug brings some harmful side effects that it is important to understand:
* Acute pancreatitis
* Necrotizing and hemorrhagic pancreatitis
* Kidney function issues
* Kidney failure
* Weight loss
* Nausea and vomiting
* low blood sugar
* Pain in the upper, middle, or lower back
Acute pancreatitis is caused by inflammation in the pancreas. As with any inflammation in the body, damage can ensue as a result. Swelling left unchecked in the pancreas can shut down the body’s vital organs. Swelling of the body can become a result of swelling that is unchecked in the pancreas. Acute pancreatitis can lead to pancreatic cancer, although it does not in some cases.
Kidney Issues Using Byetta
Kidney function issues provide a “red flag” for those who are taking the drug. Diabetes affects kidney function in some individuals, and swelling in the body is seen for some as a dangerous sign. The goal of diabetes medication is to reduce swelling; therefore, it swelling increases, and it is unusual in nature, it may be best to cease the drug. Kidney function issues involve not only swelling of the prostate or uterus, but can also cause the body to urinate less than normal or not at all.
Weight loss is another side effect of Byetta. Patients are told by their doctors that the key to leading a healthy life is to exercise and work out regularly. If you find that you lead a sedentary lifestyle and are still experiencing major weight loss, then this is a cause for concern and could be pancreatic cancer or cancer in general.
What Led to Byetta Drug Lawsuits?
A sudden hike in the number of pancreatic cancer contractions can raise eyebrows, but Byetta was such a fatal drug that it produced 30 cases of acute pancreatitis in less than eighteen months (April 2005-August 2006). In 2007, the FDA issued a warning to Amylin and its distributor, Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals, about adding more in depth information to Byetta’s warning label about the pancreatic cancer risk associated with Byetta.
In 2008, the six new cases were reported, with two deaths from the drug (and pancreatic cancer) being reported. At the time, the four others were in recovery. No new information is known about those patients.
78 Cases of Kidney Complications
By October 2008, another negative side effect about the drug Byetta surfaced, with 78 cases of kidney function complications with those who received the medication. In many of these cases, patients with existing kidney disease or those at risk for kidney disease were at higher risk to experience kidney function complications, but there were cases where patients suffered who had no history or genetic tendency toward kidney disease.
While those with kidney disease are likely to experience it, an increased concern is raised for those who do not have symptoms of the disease and experience kidney failure issues.
